I will be participating in a medical relief and education mission trip to Port au Prince, Haiti, with members of Team Broken Earth Barrie in April 2018.
This will be my third mission to Haiti with Team Broken Earth Barrie. I'm an emergency physician, and I will be working in the emergency room at the Bernard Mevs Hospital in Port au Prince.
I think that I continue to go back for many reasons: a chance to share my time and expertise with people struggling in a resource limited environment, a chance to challenge myself, and a chance to gain a perspective that I hope to bring back to my practice at home.
In Haiti, with its limited resources, the resiliance of its people has strengthened a sense of community and caring. Despite the privations that the people of Haiti have endured, they haven't lost their dignity or humanity.
In Canada, particularly Ontario, our heavily bureacratized and over-burdened system of healthcare feels dehumanizing at times. In the austere medical environment of Port Au Prince, I felt a connectedness with my colleagues on the team, the local Haitian staff, and the patients. I come back from these experiences grateful for what I have, and emboldened to advocate for change at home.
