Hello!
I am a registered nurse and have worked in the operating room for the past 20 years. (I can't believe it has been that long already!) I love what I do - I get to learn about the complexities of the human body every day, as well as meet people from all walks of life. When I started nursing, a long term desire was to use my skills in other countries where there is limited access to health care and medical resources. Finally - post covid - I have the opportunity to travel to Guatemala with some of my colleagues! In October 2022, I will be volunteering with "Team Broken Earth - Barrie" to help people in Guatemala that don't have access to the type of surgical treatments that we have here. Our surgical team is made up of 26 nurses, surgeons, and anesthesiologists, many of whom have volunteered with Broken Earth in the past. We will be doing gyne, general, and orthopedic surgeries during the week that we are there, and I will be on the general surgery team. The majority of our patients will be Mayan people who live in remote mountainous communities hours outside of Gautemala City. As you can imagine, a surgical mission to Guatemala is a huge undertaking, requiring numerous resources. There are no medical supplies in Guatemala for us to use, so everything we need, we have to bring with us. A major part of our preparation for this trip will be securing supplies and medications required to conduct as many as 70 surgeries. Each team member is required to raise $2500.00 to help cover the cost of medical supplies, travel, and accommodation while we are there. I have created my own fundraising page to collect donations in support of this effort. If you would like to contribute towards this medical mission, just click on the "Sponsor Me" button to make a donation. Broken Earth is a registered charity and all financial donations are tax deductible. Please visit their website to see the amazing work that this organization has done over the past few years. Thank you in advance for your support. If you have any questions, feel free to contact me by email at sma30@hotmail.com. I look forward to sharing my experiences in Gautemala with you! Sincerely, Sarah
