Guatemala take 3!
I will be returning to Guatemala October 12-20, 2024 for my third medical mission trip with Team Barrie. We will be working in Antigua at the same hospital we were at last year. Our patients will primary be from remote communities in Guatemala where medical access is extremely limited, and our group will consist of one gyne team, one gen surg team, one ortho team, and a dental team.
Returning to the same hospital means that I will get to work with some of the Guatemalan nurses and support staff who became friends. One of my posts that I journalled while in Guatemala last year sums up the pull that this place has on my heart:
"The past 2 days have been so incredibly full. It is hard to know what to post at times... how to adequately explain what it is like here. Antigua is a coming together of extravagances and poverty, like oil and water, weaving around each other in this little valley. An essay on entitlement and gratitude. I feel the privilege that I live, and I am humbled by the outpouring of grace from my new Guatemalan friends. Especially the Guatemalan staff we worked with in the hospital. In an OR setting, there are many rules, and at home we can be very wary of new comers. Here, we came into their hospital and they were gracious enough to show us how things are done in Guatemala and to partner with us as a larger team. We learned from each other and our Guatemalan counterparts became our co-workers and team members."
I am so grateful for the financial donations that enabled me to be part of the medical mission in 2022, and again in 2023. It is not easy asking for donations, but without this type of support, Broken Earth would not be able to do the work it does. Each member of the team is a volunteer and we use vacation time or unpayed leave in order to be away from our regular jobs. Financial donations help pay for the team's transportation to and from Guatemala, our accommodations, and medical supplies like sponges, sutures, dressings, medication, and blood for transfusions.
