In 2016, Team Broken Earth Barrie conducted its first medical mission to Haiti. The team returned on two other occassions in 2017 and 2018. You can view the teams past missions and follow future missions on our FB page (https://www.facebook.com/tbe.barrie.5) There is still much work to do with our friends in Haiti and no fewer than 14 teams will travel there over the next year.
In 2018, Broken Earth expanded their mission work to include two missions to Guatemala. Teams Calgary and Vancouver initially completed missions there in partnership with Partner for Surgery (partnerforsurgery.org). In April, 2019, Team Barrie conducted our initial mission to Guatemala. The team will be returining in May 2020, with a 24 member surgical team. I am very happy to say that I will be joining the team.
Over the course of 6 days we will conduct clinics and perform dozens of surgeries. One particular challenge we have lies in the preparation prior to going. We need to secure supplies and equipment through donations or purchase. A large inventory had been built up in Haiti over the past 9 years from numerous teams travelling there. No such inventory exists in Guatemala... if we need it, we must bring it! Each team member is required to raise funds for their travel and the actual cost of operating on patients, in addition to the costs of purchasing various supplies.
