I will be participating in a medical relief and education mission with members of Team Broken Earth Ottawa in November 2024. This is the same organization that I did missions with in Haiti previously.  This time we are going to San Juan de la Maguana in the Dominican Republic.

The group will focus on adult orthopaedic and paediatric plastic surgery. Some members of this team made an initial working visit in the fall of 2023. They were able to sort out logistics to allow for a more comprehensive team on this return trip. Of interest was their use of local medical students to asssist in translation, thereby also providing educational value for these students.

The purpose of these missions is to provide free care to local patients who cannot access necessary interventions. We must bring our own  equipment which means obtaining orthopaedic implants, sutures, dressings, medications and other OR and anaesthesia supplies. Many of us will pay our own travel and as such much of the fundraising is directed toward these costly items.

I have created my own fundraising page to collect donations in support of this effort. Those of you who know me are well aware of my experience and of the impact that I believe these carefully selected missions make of the lives of day-to-day people.
