My personal message:

From my last surgical mission to Guatemala, October 17, 2024:

Guatemala Day 4 - This city is a mixture of light and shadows.... the soft glow of the sun sneaking it's way over the mountains paints the ancient buildings with fresh hope. The birds are some of the first to rise, announcing the sun with their singing. Then with waking comes a gradual business and noise in the streets. Tuc tucs and motorcycles, busses, and even a small truck full of fat, pink pigs hurry on their way to whatever purpose is before them. Store owners are sweeping the sidewalks or hosing down their entrance ways, preparing to welcome customers into their spaces. Stray dogs trot across the streets, stopping only to inspect what may be a morsel of food with their nose. People sitting on the sidewalks dressed in colourful clothing - often missing limbs or with a baby tied to their back - set up bracelets on blankets in the hopes of enticing passer bys to make a purchase. Small children with dirt smugged faces fight with their siblings while their tired mother stares blankly across the street into the park. All of them so different and yet the same. All of them wanting something better. Something more than what they have. Hoping for a sale or a meal or just hoping for a little bit of rest and peace. Hoping for that soft light to shine on them.

I will be returning to Guatemala from October 10–18, 2026 for my fourth surgical mission trip with Broken Earth Team Barrie. It will have been two years since I was last at San Pedro Hospital in Antigua, and I am incredibly eager to return — almost as though I am going home. Each time I travel to this beautiful country, the people find a way to sneak into your heart and speak to your soul. I go hoping to help and share my skills, but these trips are truly a give-and-take experience. I always return home with a renewed perspective on myself, my community, and what truly matters.

As with past trips, our team will provide surgical and dental care to people from remote communities throughout Guatemala where access to medical care is extremely limited. In previous years, some patients have travelled as far as 14 hours to receive surgical treatment. This year, our team will include specialists in gynecology, general surgery, orthopedics, plastics, urology, and dental care. With approximately 40 team members, it will be one of our largest missions to date.

I am deeply grateful for the financial support that allowed me to participate in medical missions in 2022, 2023, and 2024. Asking for donations is never easy, but without this support, Broken Earth would not be able to provide the care that it does. Every member of our team volunteers their time and uses vacation days or unpaid leave to participate. Donations help cover transportation to and from Guatemala, accommodations, and essential medical supplies such as sutures, dressings, medications, surgical supplies, and blood for transfusions.
