Paws 4 Jake

Hi! I'm Jake, and I'm 11 years old. I was diagnosed with autism in 2019, and since then, my life has been filled with both challenges and joys. I love spending time with my family, playing video games, swimming, and most of all, being with my dog, Charlie.

A New Chapter

This year, I started at a new, much larger junior high school. I was excited but also a bit nervous about the change. That's why I'm thrilled to have been accepted onto the waitlist for an autism service dog from Kingston 4 Paws.

How a Service Dog Will Help Me

In school, I sometimes feel overwhelmed by noise and changes in routine. I also get anxious in social situations. I believe that having a service dog will be really helpful for me. Here’s how:

Calming Presence: When I feel upset or anxious, having a service dog would help me calm down. I love dogs, and I know that a service dog would offer me comfort with their hugs and kisses.
Managing Overstimulation: When things get too noisy or chaotic, a service dog can help me take a break. I can take the dog for a walk, which will let people think the dog needs a break, helping me get some space without drawing attention to myself.
Improving Focus: If I’m struggling with a task or feeling overwhelmed, spending time with the dog can help me refocus and think more clearly. They can provide tactile stimulation, which can help calm me down.
Navigating Social Situations: Having a dog by my side would spark interest and conversations with others, helping me feel more comfortable and engaged in social settings.
Supporting Behavioral Regulation: During times when I feel overstimulated or anxious, a service dog would help ground me and reduce my agitation by providing a consistent and calming presence.

Why Your Support Matters

Kingston 4 Paws is a wonderful organization, but they don't receive government funding. Training a service dog costs about $20,000, and while the dogs are provided free to families like mine, fundraising is essential to support this amazing program. I’m asking for your help to raise funds needed to train a service dog that will support me through school and beyond.
