Eligibility & Pre-requisites:

APPS is designed for PSWs & Health Care Aides who have an interest in enhancing their knowledge and skills related to palliative and end-of-life care.

• Must be a PSWs or Health Care Aide
• Must have completed  Fundamentals of HPC (or Equivalent )

Participants will learn/develop skills and strategies for:

• enhancing communication with the person, family, and team members
• effective team functioning and self-care
• relieving common end-of-life symptoms.

• Facilitation and mentorship by experienced local palliative care nurse consultants
• Successful completion of APPS prepares learners to meet the palliative care competencies for PSWs as outlined in the Ontario Palliative Care Competency Framework and Canadian Interdisciplinary Palliative Care Competency Framework.

Course Overview

This 8-week online course builds upon the Fundamentals of HPC Program, and focuses on the PSW’s scope of practice relating to the foundational concepts of HPC.

Course Structure

• Self-Directed Learning Activities  - All course work / materials are provided online using the Brightspace Learning Environment; thus, learners are required to use a computer, tablet or smart phone to participate.
• Three Virtual Classroom Sessions scheduled three weeks apart allow time for online, self-directed reading/activities and applying learning to daily practice. Learners attend the three classroom sessions online - via a link that will be provided.  Please note:  This course requires learners to interact with their peers and facilitators during these virtual classroom sessions.
