Why are there discrepancies between my GiftTool reports, my Google Analytics account and/or other web analytics solutions?

According to the Google Analytics documentation, it's not unusual to notice discrepancies between the transactions reported in your GiftTool reports and the data provided by Google Analytics and/or other web analytics solutions. Unfortunately, it’s impossible to know exactly how to account for these differences and resolve the discrepancy.

There are many possible reasons for differences in tracking results, including:

  • Have you setup your GiftTool account to use Google's Universal Analytics when you actually have a Google Classic Analytics account, or vice versa? Learn how to find out which version you are using.
  • If using Universal Analytics, have you excluded gifttool.com from your referrer domains? Learn more.
  • If you are auto-populating your donation page with a modified URL, has your developer decorated your modified GiftTool URLs. Learn more.
  • If none of your GiftTool transaction data are being displayed in Google Analytics, and several days have passed since you enabled Google Analytics within GiftTool, try resaving your Google Analytics tracking code within your GiftTool account.
  • Differences in how page reloads and unique visitors are counted. Google counts every page reload, but a browser won't count reloads of cached pages.
  • Differences in how page visits are defined. For example, some analytics software counts search bots as visitors, while other software doesn’t.
  • Google can only count visitors with javascript and cookies enabled. Some visitors might not allow cookies or javascript.
  • Discrepancies might be introduced because of different reporting timezones.
